Day to Evening

What I Wore Day:
Button-down: NY&Co - $4
Skirt: Old Navy - $20
Belt: Target - $4
Shoes: Target - $7
Earrings: Target - $3

What I Wore Evening:
Boyfriend Jeans: Target - $20
Shoes: Shoe Dept - $30
Hat: hand-me-up from sister (Target)

This summer has been an incredible balance of work during the day and fun with friends around town in the evenings. Skip n' Whistle sent over this Boston Terrier pop-over (I chose this partly because it was adorable and partly because I have a special place in my heart for Bostons!). While it has been monsooning here the past week or so, it at least brought cooler temps with it, so I was able to put together an outfit that I wore during the day to work with a colleague in my classroom, then I wanted to wear it out with some friends...giving you guys double the daily outfits today. Rain + short hair = a really hard combination, hence the hat. I thought it was fun and functional for an unpredictable outdoor adventure. I'm still not 100% sold on wearing hats with an every day outfit, but I thought the added quirkiness of the Boston Terrier sweatshirt made it a necessity!

For those of you who have short hair, please share your styling and product tips! I'm still new at this and I have so much to learn. :)

Have a great weekend!
XO,

I love both outfits!

I use Aveda's Light Elements Texturizing Cream (that little canister lasts a long time!). I put a little on the tips of my fingers (not the palm of my hand because that wastes a lot) and muss up my hair. Once the cream is more in my hair than on my hands, I style my hair. It's nice because the cream is really light so it doesn't feel/look like you've got product in your hair. I also use a tiny (3-4 inches) flat iron (before the styling cream) to work out the waves. I have really thick hair so I've got to do a lot taming before I step out the door! If you have thick hair, your stylist can thin it out with texturizing scissors that also can give a feathered look around the ears. The day to day is easy but I get my hair cut every 3-4 weeks: alternating between a nape/bang trim which is free at most salons and then an all over cut.

(Sorry for the long windedness! I've obviously spent too much time thinking about a hairstyle!)

I love the hair! I too have short hair, but it is also curly. I alternate between Moroccan Oil wave defining cream (for humid days) and a product called Hair Crack for straightening (low humidity/not raining) days. I too use a tiny straightening iron. I have haircuts scheduled every 4 weeks as my hair grows really fast. I'm anxious to see how you style yours each day. Again, it is adorable!

How fun is your dog shirt...love it!

What a sassy outfit (or outfits) with the new sassy 'do! Invest in really good hair gel - Pureology (is probably the best and price tag shows, Redken, ISO Bouncy Creme. You can find most of these at the salon, but you get get a good discount at a beauty supply store or even online (I think Target sometimes has these, but I think they are a cheaper at the beauty supply store). It seems like a lot to spend on hair gel - but you only use a dime size, so it lasts a long time! Keep the sassy outfits coming! :)

Wow! I'm going to use your tips for sure. Thanks for your long windedness :)

Gorgeous! I love the boyfriend jeans with those shoes. Must.Find.Boyfriend.Jeans!

Your short hair is so chic! I love both outfits but the skirt is my favorite - can't seem to get enough stripes lately!

Both outfits are great, and I love the hat! I have a hard time with hats, too, mostly because I spend most of my time indoors (I was raised to never wear hats indoors), and when I'm outside it's crazy windy here so I'm afraid it would just blow away, making it not very practical. So I will just admire others that wear hats and look super cute doing so!

Your hair looks amazing!

That sweatshirt is so adorable! I have a special place in my heart for Bostons too. There was one that belonged to the owner of a furniture store that my parents frequented, and the only reason I ever tagged along is so I could play with Patsy the Boston Terrier! Ha!

Whitney said...

whatever, you loook great!

Such a fun top! And surprisingly versatile too, because I love each of these remixes. Layered and belted with the striped top was a great way to dress it up a little. Definitely an outfit I would wear to work. Also love the new haircut! I've missed so much being out of the blogging loop, but I absolutely adore it! Have a great weekend, lady!

you are so cute with your new hair. I can't get over how good it looks on you! I could never in a million billion years pull it off.

Whitney said...

To be honest, I was really scared for you, because you have such long and pretty hair, and you were going to cut it all off?!?!! But seeing the pictures now, I think you made a great decision. The hair really compliments your features, and the boyish-ness of it is balanced by your pretty face. Plus if you never cut it, you'll never know if you like it or not! I had a similar cut back in high school because I was just sick of my hair, and ugh, it was bad. Yours is like, a million times better. Plus I didn't really wear makeup back then so I really did look like a boy. :(

I've never chopped off all my hair, but I imagine if I did, I'd have it up in headbands and wraps every other day. Random question: did you get that hat recently, and do you find it to be a snug fit? I went to Target recently and found a super cute fedora but either it's small or I have a ginormous head. I'm hoping for the former.

Whitney said...

Ahh you are too much! That sweatshirt is amazing! I love both outfits so so much! Can we share a closet (namely yours)? Oh and your hair just keeps getting cuter and cuter!

Whitney said...

oh my dear, that sweatshirt is so cute! i'm still kind of pining over the old navy fox sweater, so this one definitely appeals to me with its fun quirkiness! i love both of the ways you styled it!

Well I've never had hair that short, but I do have a short bob and I love Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. You're supposed to use it to fight frizz, but I just use it instead of hair gel or wax and it's perfect for me. Don't get freaked out by the prize, you only need a tiny little bit, so it lasts forever. I either use a flat iron to put in some waves or I blow it out, then put the serum in and scrunch it, a little hairspray, done. I have naturally straight hair though, so I don't know how it's gonna work on yours, but a friend of mine has natural curls too and she uses it as well and loves it.

Okay, I absolutely love this. First of all, that sweatshirt is freaking adorable. I also love Boston Terriers (heyyy lobster) - one of my best friends from high school has four of them and they are so funny! I LOVE both of your outfits - the first one is perfect, with the layered button-down underneath, the striped skirt, the belt, I love it! And your second one is SO CUTE. Those jeans are amazing and fit you perfectly. I'm on the fence about boyfriend jeans, but these have maybe converted me. And I adore your sandals!! I think the hat is really fun with this outfit, too.

As for short hair tips, I have a few tips. My favorite short-hair product is Redken Wax Blast (http://www.redken.com/products/styling/volume/wax-blast-10-high-impact-finishing-spray-wax). I have used it for years and I LOVE IT. It gives your hair some hold without getting crunchy, heavy, etc. It helps hold shape really well. I love wearing headbands to change up my looks, but I am in desperate need of finding new, cute headbands! I get my hair thinned and texturized too, which makes it look a little more natural and less blunt. Also, since my hair is naturally wavy, I blow dry it straight (sometimes with a large round brush) and then use a flat iron to make sure it is all falling in the same direction. Hope that helps!!

Whitney said...

I agree, Francine!

Thanks so much, Amber! I will definitely be looking for the texturizing cream--it sounds exactly like what I'm looking for! :)

Whitney said...

My aunt has had three Boston Terriers -- and they are seriously the sweetest, most fun dogs! I am so glad I found these boyfriend jeans, too. They're kind of perfect.

YES. Thank you so much for the tips! I have a few headbands left over from my Blair Waldorf obsession several years back...so I've been rotating those a bit. :)

Whitney said...

Thanks so much, Kathi! I'll definitely take a look--maybe I can track down a sample of it or I can buy it from Ulta so I can return it if it doesn't quite work.

Whitney said...

Isn't it just different? I love it for that--and I don't have any quirky animal shirts like this, so it was definitely time! Thanks, Heidi!

Whitney said...

There's a house for sale behind me -- move and share my closet. :) Thanks so much, Angela!

Whitney said...

Yes! Headbands are perfect with my hair -- I've been playing with them for a few days.

My sister bought this hat last summer, I think. I know they have one similar. It fits snugly on my head (and a little further down, but you can't see my face very well in pictures, so I wore it up a little bit).

Whitney said...

I was scared for me, too! I worried that I'd feel that way after I got it cut, but I just needed a change! I really love it -- thank you so much for all the sweet compliments!

I don't think you'd look like a boy, by the way. I am pretty sure you could pull it off and wear your cute little skirts and boots...and it would be perfect.

Whitney said...

Thank you, sweet Franny! I think I just lucked out--this haircut could have been a disaster! :)

Whitney said...

Thanks so much, Callie! We don't have WiFi at our house now, so I'm living on Panera visits...so you aren't too far out of the loop! :)

Whitney said...

You're adorable.

Whitney said...

Awww! I love stories like that! My aunt and uncle have had three Bostons and I have loved each of them dearly. Dogs are so sweet!

Whitney said...

Thank you so much, Laura!

Whitney said...

I completely agree. This hat gets a lot of wear at the beach or the pool, but I haven't worn it out in public around town until this outfit, you know? :) Thank you, Kim!

Whitney said...

I really liked how the skirt outfit came together! I originally just wore the shirt with the skirt, but then added the button down and belt piece by piece. :)

Whitney said...

Thanks so much, Jen! I hope your friend loves it as much as I do! :)

Thanks for tagging me! We still don't have WiFi at my house yet, so I'm sure I would've noticed it had I read my usual blog roll! :)

Boyfriend jeans are a gem of a clothing item! I am so glad I got them!

Whitney said...

I'm definitely feeling more sassy since I got my new haircut! :) Thanks so much!

I will definitely look for the products you recommended. I think I have seen Pureology at Ulta, right?

Whitney said...

Isn't it adorable?? :)

Whitney said...

I have been hesitant to try oil-based products because my skin tends to get oily...maybe I'll get one just to try on occasion. Thanks so much, Missy!

Whitney said...

Yes :) And I think they are having a sale on hair products this month - which reminds me that I need to get in there! BTW, I was reading one of your comments (comment stalker, I know), and you mentioned that you have oily skin. I do too, and I'm always curious what makeup (foundation) other people use - what do you like? I

Whitney said...

Totally not a comment stalker! I love having discussions and opening it up for everyone to talk to each other! :)

In the summer, I've only been wearing a BareMinerals concealer and ELF's high definition powder. In the cooler months, I will wear a little more powder (BareMinerals), but I really don't wear that much make-up on my face. Eye make-up, however, is my main love! :)

Whitney said...

Your hair looks amazing!!!! I've had short hair off and on (mostly on) since I was 19 (I'm 33 now). As you get more and more confident with it yo are going to love it more and more! I am currently 9 1/2 months pregnant and I think it's the hormones, but I was debating on not getting my hair cut tomorrow and growing it....then yesterday morning it literally took me 20 minutes to get ready with makeup and hair and everything and I said....what are you thinking??? You are totally cutting your hair! I change products a lot, just because I love me some products. However, I highly recommend Kevin Murphy's matte styling paste. I have a lot of hair, but it is fine and sometimes product gives a little too much shine to short hair. It's important for me not to look greasy! Anything by Kevin Murphy is great I must say!
On another note, how does that sweatshirt fit? True to size? I love it!

Whitney said...

Also, I agree with Amber's tip about thinning! I do not have thick hair but I have a lot of it and this is huge for me to do, you might notice if you don't it can get a little 'helmet-y' looking! :-)

Whitney said...

That's so awesome! Congrats on the baby -- any day now!!! :) I think you'll definitely enjoy the short hair with that new added time-taker!

The sweatshirt fits perfectly true to size. It isn't as long as a typical sweatshirt and the material is a little thinner. It didn't shrink when I washed it and air dried it. :)
