When I was in high school, I refused to tuck in my shirts. I thought it made me look frumptastic and old, so when my band directors required us to tuck in our shirts, I always rolled it or tied it back to make it look like it was tucked in. I also asserted my teenage rebellion and rolled the sleeves so they weren't super long on my arms (and that was the extent of my teenage rebellion). That's why my students never get away with breaking the dress code; I wrote the book on how to avoid following it.
These days, however, I am not a fan of leaving my shirts untucked. I don't know why I've flip-flopped in my 20s...maybe it's just another tier to my rebellious streak? Sometimes, an outfit just looks better when the shirt is untucked, right?
So, I have to ask. Do you tuck?

Ha! I was the opposite. I tucked in my shirt all the time. Until I figured out that with my short torso tucking my shirt made my proportions look all wrong. Now if I'm wearing pants I wear my shirt untucked probably 95% of the time. The outfit you have on today looks great with the shirt untucked. I think if it was tucked in your torso would look really short!
I definitely flip-flop between the two! Lately I've been going with the untucked look, but i'll probably be back on the tucked-in train soon!

I love this outfit! The shirt looks great untucked. I usually don't tuck, but lately with skirts I have been. I rarely tuck with pants - untucked is the way to go.
I liked this untucked look...the whole outfit is cute and very flattering!
back in the high school days, i was a master of the half-tuck that is SOOOOO popular now. who knew i was just ahead of my time?
then in more recent history, i was team anti-tuck for years. having put on weight, most of which i carried around the middle, i felt that it just accentuated what i was trying to camouflage. then when i discovered blogland, i realized that some outfits actually looked more complimentary when they WERE tucked.
most recently, ive lost most of the excess weight, so im not as seld-conscious when i tuck. now it's truly just a decision i make based on the outfit itself. some days it looks better in, some days out.
but im TOTALLY gonna start rockin the half-tuck again. ;)
Whitney I am loving the leopard print and yellow look so much!!! I prefer my shirts tucked too...I don't know why but I feel more proper with it tucked in..when its untucked i feel a bit more messy..even though people have untucked shirts all the time and it doesn't look messy. xo
Cute and classic outfit! :) I always tuck if I'm wearing something high-waisted, like a pencil skirt ... but like Erin, I have a short torso, and tucking in other situations looks odd.
I always got in trouble in high school for folding my shirt instead of actually tucking it in - silly private school uniform rules! Now, I very rarely tuck my shirt in, because I always feel like it makes me look bulkier around the middle. I'm trying to tuck my shirt in more often to get used to the idea, and I think I might just be paranoid about the "bulky middle" phenomenon!

I love this!! That yellow looks awesome with the pattern! I find myself always struggling with this - as I've gotten older I've started buying pants that come up a bit higher, and so sometimes I feel like tucking in really doesn't make me look good...but sometimes it feels unprofessional or not polished enough if it is untucked. See? So torn!
The shirt looks cute untucked :) I love leopard and yellow together!
Dude, NO ONE tucked in their tops when we were in high school! Now it's a whole waist-defining thing, and everyone's doing it. I have to remind myself that I don't have to do it all the time.

Too funny-- I have always tucked (but pulled it out slightly for a loose tuck) because I thought untucked just looks sloppy. This past year, I've stepped out of my comfort zone by tucking in. Now, I let the length of the top and how it looks on me be the ultimately deciding factor. Audrey did a great post here about clothing fit, and I think tucking can be considered in the same light as shirt lengths.

Today we did a lil matchy match! Leopard, rawr! I love this outfit on you! The tucking was a shocker to me, but then you explained yourself! I, on the other hand am totally not a tucking in type of person. However, lately I think you've influenced me! =]
I actually didn't start tucking until this year. I thought it too was frumpish, but tried it and realized how flattering it looks on my short-waisted square shape. I'm a changed woman, but agree there a still times when unbuckling makes sense, like with today's look :)

I think this is the perfect outfit to have it untucked - I think tucked it in would take the casual cool away. yes, casual cool is a thing. It's that perfect way of dressing where you look effortless even though you put in a ton of effort. I always envy those biyatches.
Cute, cute, cute! I like to tuck into skirts (although it's freeing when I leave a shirt untucked over a pencil skirt, haha), but tend to leave my pants untucked. I think it's a self-conscious thing, mainly. A pencil skirt hits me up towards my waist so I don't have to worry about looking like a snowman...whereas pants hit my in my squishiest section, making me look a little segmented. I love the look of a tucked in shirt with pants, though!

Hey Whitney, You look adorable.
Please check out my blog at rockingtherunway.blogspot.com
First, this has to be one of your top ten outfits I've seen---it's smoking and yet modest all in one. LOVE it! Second, hate tucking. I've always had a weird body and before the recent weight loss, tucking just made me look like I had extra where in fact I didn't. Now there is no extra and everything is too big so I frequently have to tuck just to make stuff fit better. But if I could go for untucked all the time I would...... (part of it is also that I have a short waist, leaving untucked visually extends my waist line....)
That's so sweet! I'm glad you liked the outfit -- I thought it was almost too easy to put together.
Good for you with the weight loss! I know that changing sizes is a major adjustment and takes some time to reconfigure not just what you wear, but how you wear it.
Thanks, Liz!
I am a big fan of tucking shirts into pencil skirts -- I have a long torso, but stubby legs, so anything to make my legs look longer, right? haha!
You never look like a snowman (at least from what I've seen)!
So glad I can be one of those biyatches you envy. I feel all cool and stuff now.
I'm right there with you! I didn't start tucking shirts in until I started wearing skirts a lot!
Woo! Go us! (insert internet high five here)
I like that you leave your outfits untucked -- it really works for you!
Love it! I love Audrey's blog, too -- full of great tips like that! I completely agree.
You're so right! The style was so different--low rise jeans, tight shirts you didn't have to tuck in...man, I regret some of those outfits...
I really like leopard and yellow together, as well. I think it makes sense!
I am 100% with you on the waist of pants! When I was in high school, I didn't like pants that weren't low-low rise. My perception of fit and comfort has completely changed since then! I wouldn't be caught dead in some of the stuff I wore then! haha!
ha! That was me, too! Now I'm that teacher that gets onto kids for not tucking in their shirts...hmmm...Just doing my job, right? haha!
That's a really good point--it depends on the waist of the pants and the length/fit of the shirt. I have a long waist, but relatively short legs, so I'm always trying to make my legs longer.
HA! I feel more proper when I tuck my shirt in, too!
You're like the hipster of tucking in shirts. I wonder what else you do now that will be super cool in the next few years...
I felt the same way about tucking in my shirts--I thought it only accentuated the wrong areas, but I think that a high-waisted skirt is really flattering with a tucked in shirt!
Thanks, Theresa! It was comfortable, too!
If I leave my top untucked, it's typically with pants. That's a really interesting point! I never realized that about myself before!
So funny! I'm opposite (longer torso, short legs), so I'm trying to balance my weird proportions. If I leave a shirt untucked, I try to balance that with some heels so I'm not cutting my legs off!
That's so interesting that you flipflop between the two! It seems like everyone has a preference, or they do one more than the other. Maybe you just have super awesome abilities that the rest of us need to learn. ;)
Hah! I used to be vehemently against tucking in my shirts.. up until like two years ago! I just recall Kendi posting a picture of her shirt tucked vs. untucked and it opened up my eyes to how much better things looked when tucked in (oh! found it: http://www.kendieveryday.com/2010/05/magic-tricks.html)
Haha, glad you haven't seen snowman Brynn yet. I try hard to avoid that ;) Yes, isn't it amazing what a pencil skirt can do for our bodies?? Love them.
Ha, well the weight loss was definitely not intentional! Byproduct of Insanity and running becoming daily coping mechanisms and losing my appetite due to the divorce! I'd love to get a bit of the fat back actually because I miss my boobs!!
I was never much of a tucker...but now I love it, especially with a higher waisted pants! Love this outfit, I need to get myself to BR for that cardigan, I am searching for the perfect mustard cardigan everywhere!
New to your blog. Found you via pinterest. Love your style. I am a new teacher and dont want to ever be a frumpy one lol.
I'm so glad you found me, Christine! I definitely don't want to become a frumpy teacher -- haha! :) This blog has really helped me keep away from that!
So funny! I am glad that we can definitely use other bloggers to inspire us and take us out of our comfort zones!
I wish I could pull off high-waisted pants! Rock it! I got this cardigan last fall, but I definitely like Banana Republic's clothes overall!
