February Closet Review

Okay, February was a tricky month. I did another mini-closet purge, but I also gave a few things to my sister and didn't keep track of it. I also got a few things from my sister's giveaway pile--along with a few new things from her shopping trip. I'll kind of step away from trying to over-explain everything and let you guys judge how I did this month:

Subtractions:

This month, I tried to focus on removing clothes from my closet that I haven't worn in a while, regardless of any attachments I had to them! I also focused on fit. A lot of my clothes aren't quite fitting anymore (positive complaint, I guess), and I don't want to hold onto clothes that are "fallbacks" in case I gain weight. Logical, right? I don't plan to lose anymore weight, so I'm hoping that my current size will stick for a while (and if not, I have plenty of belts to hold everything together...)

1. NY&Co blue floral pencil. Reasoning: Fit. It fit my sister really well, so she took it home with her.
2. LOFT striped skirt. Reasoning: It's a little too big now, and I have the navy striped skirt that my mom made -- seemed a little redundant.
3. LOFT floral skirt. Reasoning: Too big, probably too short for work. Not really my style anymore.
4. Mint accordion skirt. Reasoning: Haven't worn it.
5. eShakti navy skirt. Reasoning: It's pretty, but I haven't worn it.
6. Target turquoise skirt. Reasoning: I love the color, but it was an impulse buy when I got it...and it's also too big on me now. My sister took it home (it looks adorable on her!)
7. Target blue/White striped shirt Reasoning:  has a hole in the back. I really like this shirt and I want to find one to replace it. Maybe not a v-neck next time.
8. Target camel cardigan. Reasoning: I wore it to its death.
9. NY&Co mauve short sleeved cardigan. Reasoning: I haven't worn it often enough to keep it around. I'm really not attracted to the color in general.
10. LOFT ruffle front shirt. Reasoning: I have enough white ruffle shirts. This one is hard to layer because the ruffles are attached to the front in an odd way, so I have to wear it by itself. Not my fave. Sister took it home.
11. Heart sweater -- added it back to my closet after the picture. I talked myself into liking it. :)
12. Old Navy sequin tank. Reasoning: Haven't worn it.
13. GAP coral babydoll tank. Reasoning: The only reason I have been hanging onto it is because I "could wear it to the beach," when I, in fact, have yet to even pack it to take to the beach. Silly girl.
14. (not pictured) GAP pink sequin shirt. Reasoning: Super cute, just didn't wear it. I thought my sister would enjoy it more, so she took it home.
Additions

Using my "I can replace items within reason" clause, I replaced two pairs of shoes that I got rid of in January (my nude heels and black heels), and I splurged on a $19 pair because it was BOGO and the nude pair didn't count in that offer. I've worn the camel wedges several times already, so I think they were worth it:

1. Payless black pointy-toed heels: $4.50
2. Round-toe nude heels (super comfy) - $20
3. Camel wedges - $19

As I mentioned on President's Day, I went shopping with my sister to help her start her wardrobe over. I told her that I'd go with her and help, so she insisted on adding a few things for me in her shopping cart (trust me, I protested as much as one can when someone is trying to give you free clothes!). Also...we did a mini clothes exchange of sorts, and I wound up with a fedora that she didn't want (!) among a couple other things.
So here's all my swag from the swap and shopping trip + a couple purchases of my own:

1. Black/White fedora - sister giveaway pile
2. Black/White gingham shirt - Old Navy - sister purchase
3. Blue cardigan - Old Navy - sister purchase
4. Floral scarf - sister giveaway pile
5. Black/white striped cardigan - H&M ($10) sister purchase
6. Purple flower necklace - gift from Franny (isn't she the sweetest?)
7. Pink ruffle tank - sister giveaway pile
8. Navy/white polka dot skirt - sister giveaway pile
9. Navy/White striped dress - sister purchase

I broke down and bought:
10. Blue necklace: Target - $4
11. Black necklace: Target - $9
I own the purple and orange versions that I bought back in December. I really like them--so it took me ten Target visits of eyeing them to finally break down and get them.
12. (Not pictured) "W" necklace in gold and silver - $3 each = $6. (Fran, I also got you one--in the mail this week!)

So, I spent a total of $62.50 (+tax) on myself this month, with only $19 (arguably $38) of that being unauthorized spending. Granted, $62 is a little more than my typical spending before the shopping ban, but I got rid of a lot of clothes and shoes in January and February, so the three pairs of shoes that I got serves as a one-time replacement. The necklace shopping, however, is wholly ridiculous. I admit it.

I'm linking up with Franish so I can see how all of you did this month, too!

XO,

Dang girl, you are RUTHLESS. Look at all the things you got rid of! I bet it feels so much better looking at your closet and not having all of those clothes staring at you going "hey, you bought me...why aren't you wearing me". That's how I feel anyway! Now that my closet is slowly only containing clothes I wear I feel so much better and I just like staring at my clothes for fun instead of out of fear. Whoa, that sounds so weird. I promise I'm not a weirdo.

AND I CAN'T WAIT. OMG. pretty necklace come at me.

You and your sister did really well with the swap! I really want those camel wedges - I keep seeing them on blogs and hearing how comfy they are. Those pointy toed heels were a great bargain, too! I am on a shopping hiatus for Lent - so far, so good, but a year is tough. I think you are doing well! Love the idea of swapping!

Hi Whitney! I just stumbled across your blog and I'm so glad I did! I am also a teacher (high school intervention specialist) and former cheer coach (resigned that with the birth of my second daughter) so it seems as if we have a lot in common! Well, I'm loving your blog and looking forward to getting to know you!

How fun that you and your sister can exchange clothes! I love that you provide reasoning for getting rid of things. I'm always interested in why people purchase AND purge clothing! That scarf you got from your sister is gorgeous. I'm so excited to see how you use all those new patterned items. I know that I generally shy away from patterns, and I find myself really admiring the way you masterfully use them in new and interesting ways.

I think you're doing a great job with being more intentional with your shopping, and hopefully you're seeing some of the benefits from the hiatus that you predicted when you first said you'd be doing this in 2013 (more aware of your budget, focusing on loving and using what you already have, etc.). Good for you!!!

I can't believe all the shoes you got for that price! Classic ones too... amazing!

I'd love to have you say that to my husband...he thinks I have a serious problem! haha! :)

It took us a while to get to this point in our relationship, but I am so grateful for her and the relationship we have now.

I try to do a bunch of black and white, too! I'll definitely have to check out your giveaway! Thanks!

I think we both came away with stuff we wanted/needed! :) The wedges are super comfy, but I am a big fan of wedges as an alternative to stilettos. Best of luck with your Lent promises! :)

I completely agree--the best way to "shop" is getting clothes from a friend. I almost prefer that over going to a store! :) I'm glad you got the necklace, too! I can't wait to see all the ways you wear it!

Hi Aimee! I'm so glad you found me and left a sweet message to let me know you did! We definitely have a lot in common! I might have to get some notes from you about how you survived all that + babies! :)

I'm just glad to see her -- the clothes were just an added perk! :) Fran suggested that I reason out why I get rid of things, and I think it's an excellent way for me to keep track of what I had/when/why I got rid of it. Sometimes, I miss certain items after I get rid of them, and it's nice to remind myself that if I only miss it when I want to wear a specific outfit, it's not worth having in my closet!

I hope that I'm being much more intentional and creative with my closet. This shopping "break" has been good for me!

I certainly hope I'll wear them a long time! All three of them are super comfortable.

Your husband needs to be thrilled every day that he isn't married to me. :)

*does muscle man pose* RUTH. LESS.
It feels better every time I kick something out of my closet. I am feeling so much less overwhelmed when I get dressed -- and I think that I'm getting to the point where I LOVE everything in my closet...I didn't just buy it to fill a temporary hole or jump on a $3 price tag. ha.
You are a weirdo, but in the most endearing way possible. Love it. ;)

YES. YOU SHALL WEAR IT AND WE SHALL BE NECKLACE TWINS.
(I can be a weirdo, too, right?)

That's awesome. I'm glad you have found a reasoning system that works for you :) Whenever there's something in my closet that I don't think I want anymore, I put it in the closet in our spare bedroom. Kind of that "out of sight, out of mind" mentality. A couple times a year, I donate everything that I haven't "missed," and most of the time, I never touch the items once they've gone in the other closet :)

The tan wedges are perfection!
