Civil War & Reconstruction

What I Wore:
Tank: Target - $7
Cardigan: NY&Co - $4
Skirt: Old Navy - $7
Belt: Target - $4
Shoes: Target - $8
Necklace: Amazon - $43
Earrings: Target - $10

Getting pictures of this outfit was a ridiculous struggle. So, I apologize for the weird lighting and the strange reflector-demon-eyes I have going on--my eyes have green, brown, and blue shades in them, and when photographed with lighting, they look red because of the contrast between the brown and the other shades...it's never my pupils creating red-eye...it's always my irises. Weird right?

I guess what I'm meaning to say (aside from the fact that hazel eyes are crazy hard to photograph in weird lighting), is that my shirt and skirt had a pretty intense disagreement today. On the scale of subversion to Mutually Assured Destruction, I'm pretty sure that my clothes fell somewhere in the Civil War neighborhood. They didn't get along at all and chose to spend time struggling to separate during picture time. The tank bunched up because the belt and skirt refused to hold it in place, and the cardigan wanted nothing to do with the conflict (and decided to disarm itself and remain neutral...wow, Whitney...too far).

I took pictures at home before I left for work this morning, but I didn't quite like the pictures. Then, I took more when I arrived at work...those didn't turn out well either. I am completely aware that if an outfit doesn't work in pictures, the odds are that it looks strange in person, as well, but I loved the idea of this outfit and I wanted to get at least one flattering picture of it, dang it. After giving up briefly to settle for my comfy homework clothes, I rallied the troops, put my clothes back on and tried again (Reconstruction -- get it?)

Thanks for indulging my history nerd humor. I think it will hold me over for a while.
XO,

I actually really like this outfit. I think it's very flattering on you. I'm with you though on some looks just not cooperating for pictures. So annoying. From my vantage point I think you look great!

GIrl, are you crazy?! I saw this outfit and immediately thought YES. SHE'S DONE IT. I've seen that skirt at Old Navy so many times (they currently have one like it but with thin stripes) and I love the color of it but just can't decide what I'd pair with it other than a cream colored top. This looks perfect to me! I love the detail on top & the pretty cardigan!

Everything seems to be cooperating in that last photo! It looks really nice. I hate it when outfits don't work the way I want them to (i.e., bunching)!

You look fantastic in this outfit, Whitney! Beautiful as always!!

Oh, I've had those days ... figured out the hard way that you can't tuck a silk top into a lined skirt, it keeps slipping out! Too bad these items are at war with each other - I do love the pattern mix and color scheme - I think they go so well with your hair and coloring. :)

Dude, I've had so many terrible photo shoots in my day (which makes it sound like they don't still happen...which they do). You look so cute!

Okay, I've scrutinized these pictures, and I can honestly see nothing wrong with your outfit. You are so dang cute!! I saw this skirt at Old Navy and never knew how to style it, but you do a great job with it!!

I love these pictures! Every time you wear this skirt, you create this amazing line on your body. Sorry if that sounded weird - was channeling Stacy and Clinton from What Not To Wear, but you are totally a What To Wear!

It's funny that you would feel that this outfit doesn't work because when I saw the first picture, I immediately thought that it looked really flattering on you! I love the color scheme and the mix of prints. One of my favs!

history was not my strong suit in high school so i have nothing to add to that. but i just wanted to say that you look so skinny here. #jealous

I think it looks great! The pattern mixing goes well cause the tank is toned down and the cardigan is neutral! Well done (even looks better than the Pin-spiration!)

I love the striped skirt - so cute! And I've been meaning to ask, how do you get your belt to stay in place without belt loops? I wore a belt with a skirt like this yesterday and spent all day adjusting it. I love how it looks but I need some help in the execution!

I cant put a finger on what/how but this particular sweater makes you look really taller than your other outfits. In fact I love it some much I will be wearing it this spring !! thanks for the inspiration.

Uh oh, did I inadvertently plagiarize?

Thanks for the sweet compliments!

Ooh, I like that it makes me taller! I'm a big fan of long, flowy cardigans, so this definitely makes me want to wear it more! Thanks, Aparna!

Thanks, Barb! I have no idea how it stays in place! I usually don't have trouble with belts like the one I'm wearing in this outfit, but I have trouble with the elastic bands. I wish I were more help here!

<--history major. nerrrrrrrrrrrrrd.
and gawsh, no need to be jealous. you're gorgeous.

So glad it's one of your favorites! I really like the outfit, it's just the pieces in the outfit didn't like each other! haha!

Whitney said...

Aw, Megan! That's one of the most awesome compliments ever. Stacy and Clinton are basically the best -- channel away! :)

Whitney said...

ha! Thanks, Brynn! I think Old Navy has a similar skirt right now--the stripes are just smaller and closer together. I'm not sure which style I like better, but I'm glad I picked this one up for a steal! :)

Thanks so much, Amber! It's a very comfy combo!

We're like veteran bloggers now, right? It's nice to know someone else still has the same struggles as I do!

Preach it, sister! I've done things like that, too! Halfway through the day, I typically succumb to the untuck and deal with it attitude. At least we look adorable for part of the day!
Coral is definitely a color (or one of the few!) that I think is in my wheelhouse! I have to keep myself from wearing it too much!

Whitney said...

Thank you, Crystal! :) You always leave the sweetest comments.

Woo! I managed to get one! haha! I hate it when I have an adorable outfit in my head and it doesn't quite translate to reality...

Whitney said...

Aw! Thanks, Lynette! I really do like the outfit, I just stuggled to have any free movement without it exploding into chaos. ;) I saw that Old Navy skirt -- they've got other colors, too, and I love them! If I didn't have this one, I'd totally break down and get it...

Thanks, Ginny! I really liked this outfit!

Didn't I tell you, I am made of *sugar*. hehe =]

Agreed. It's the worst!

I'm so obsessed with that skirt! LOVE!
