Topic Jumper

What I Wore:
Cardigan: H&M - $10
Shirt: Old Navy - $14
Pants: Old Navy - $7
Belt: J. Crew - $10
Shoes: Target - $8
Earrings: Forever21 - $3

I really don't have one specific topic on which I'd like to focus today, so let's pretend this is one of those "pick your own ending" situations. The rules are simple: choose a bullet and respond to it in a comment.
Ready? Go:
  • I wore pants once last week, and this is it. Just letting you know I'm upholding my pledge to wear pants more often.
  • I didn't quite define "special occasion" in my pledge not to shop. In reviewing my calendar, I am trying to decide which occasions warrant as "special." In February, I have a couple bridal showers, March is a fun trip, April is my anniversary, May is graduation (and my birthday), in June we have another wedding, but nothing stands out for the rest of the year.
  • Which of the above are "special" enough to warrant a new dress or shoes?
    • I'm thinking I might get a special occasion (already have one in mind...) dress to wear to the bridal showers and graduation, but I'll wear something I already have for the ladies only showers. I'll try to get something I can wear to both weddings. Is that a fair compromise?
  • Also, I'm going to the beach in March. It's decided. My best girlfriend and I are leaving my sweet Fins behind to enjoy some time in the sun. Why am I leaving Fins? He abandoned me a few weeks ago for a ski trip with his guys. All is fair in love and single-gender-vacations.
    • Now, the question is...is this trip a special occasion for which I can buy a fedora? I've been wanting one just to be my beach hat. That's all I want. I'm fine on bathing suits, sandals, and clothes. Just. Need. A fedora. (and a tan)
  • Last one about the ambiguity of my no-shopping except on special occasions pledge: if those Tory Burch shoes I ordered don't show up and I get a refund from Paypal, is that considered "free money"?
    • Silly technicality, of course, but maybe I should put that money toward the bridal shower/graduation outfit to make it all less sketchy. I want to be as transparent about it as possible and I appreciate your input!
  • I've unintentionally become a vegetarian (of the lacto-ovo variety) for the past two weeks.
  • I've also been fighting another illness for the past two weeks. Coincidence? Probably. But, hopefully it explains the bags under my eyes and the fact that my face looks like a zeppelin in all of my recent photos.
  • When it stops raining, I'll fix my hair again. Until then, it's going to look like I'm trying to form my own 80s hair band. There are worse things in life. I could be trying to form my own boy band. Or basketball team!
Alright, randomness aside, I hope all of you have a great week!
You have until Sunday to enter to win one of a monogrammed striped clutch (made by my talented mom) this week!
XO,

Buy the fedora! One of my favorite beach "go to" items! You definitely need to lift the shopping ban, especially for the fedora. Old Navy had some good ones last year (then again, I got a men's one) and Target (of course) has some good ones every few seasons!

Bahaha, you are so funny! I think you shall treat yourself to a "graduation gift" ie: dress and stellar heels for example. I mean, once the cap and gown comes off; we must see sexaaayy! Therefore, the shoes will be a tease to start off. hehe

If you don't already own a fedora, I think you should buy one! I definitely consider a good, solid piece like that to be a closet-necessary item! I'm on the lookout for a good fedora myself. :)

I had a lot of weddings and special events last spring and summer, so I treated myself to a couple new dresses for those occasions. Since a couple of the weddings were more casual, I went with a black t-shirt dress that I could also easily wear to work or church and I just switched up the accessories each time. Never underestimate the power of accessories! Since most of these events didn't involve the same people, I didn't worry too much about recycling the same look a couple times. Banana Republic is one of my favorite stores for dresses... I spent a whopping $12 on a $168 dress that had gone on super sale!

PS~ Buy the fedora! :)

Funny, my pledge is to get into wearing skirts and dresses more, and I have failed miserably so far this year! And yes, every beach trip requires a fedora as far as I am concerned.

Lol, I like this post. Pants are sweet. I'm trying to wear skirts more often. I wore a dress yesterday, so I'm upholding my pledge! We are awesome :)

I wish it were my graduation, but I've got a long way to go with my master's! My school is a K-12, so all teachers are required to attend graduation. I'll use any excuse to grab a new dress! ;)

1. Love the tiny pattern mixing. LOVE. navy is definitely your color.
2. I think your special occasion reasoning is sound. a dress you can wear differently to 2 weddings is a great idea. an LBD? a little navy dress?
3. I give you permission to buy a fedora. you're welcome
4. yes. free money. did they not send them?! RUDE.
5. hey girl heyyyyyyy (I had already typed 5 but ran out of questions to answer)

Again, you're killing it in navy! Love it. Also, those pants are adorable! I love the zippers at the ankles. I think getting a new dress that you can style differently is absolutely within your bounds here. A black or navy (yay, navy!!) dress would be perfect! You have all the belts, shoes, scarves, and necklaces to make a black or navy dress look completely different time and time again :)

I'm with you on pants - for whatever reason, I would just rather wear a skirt to work! Oh, and the beach sounds awesome - I'm already jealous :)

Bahaha your idea of special occasion and mine are totally different--maybe it's a southern thing? In my book, the wedding counts, that's it ;) And I'm a huge fan of reusing dresses even if people have seen them :) Use the refund money for what you're buying....and get a Fedora lady--it's vacation!

Oh....and the vegetarian transition wouldn't make you sick necessarily...but if you've cut back in fruits and veggies then your body might be lacking vitamins and minerals to recoup as fast. Plus if you were a major meat eater, then it might be a bit in shock/stress. But in reality, lots of research shows that vegetarians actually can be healthier than meat eaters....why the no meat though?

Whitney said...

That is pretty funny! Though, I will admit I'm taking any opportunity to create a "special" in any occasion. ;) I think that if I use the refund money, it makes it a little closer to kosher, right?

I've never been a big meat eater...I've just unintentionally left it out of my meals! I eat egg whites in my breakfast, but other than that, it has just been tomato soup, salads, and fruit for me. This whole sick thing hasn't been fun, but in teaching, it is SO hard to take a day off!

So glad someone is in my corner on this! I feel so at home and comfy in skirts!
I am lucky enough to live within a few hours of a beach -- and I have family who own a beach house. I don't think I'd go often if I didn't have such a cheap trip option!

Whitney said...

I wear navy a lot, right? :) I've got lots of love for it, for sure.
Woo! Justifying a new dress! I knew I liked you. ;)

1. I love navy. I thought I wore a lot of pink until I realized how much navy is in my closet.
2. Good idea. @brynnash:disqus mentioned a navy dress, too...I think it might have to happen...and it would be convenient for graduation because of our school colors. A navy lace dress maybe?
3. YES. Much love to you for that.
4. I KNOW, right? You know how excited I was about those shoes! I feel silly for getting taken for a ride, but now I get to use my Christmas money in February (that otherwise wouldn't have made it out of December).
5. heeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyy.

I thought it was a little on the whimsical side. :) Sometimes, it gets hard writing posts and solely focusing on one topic at a time. Boring. :)
Go you on the dresses front! We need a support group...

Whitney said...

So funny! You're not the first person to mention that they're opposite of me in that regard! I'm trying--and might start trying to wear pants more often than once a week! :)
Agreed about the fedora. Totally happening.

Whitney said...

That's a really good point! I do have a couple LBDs that could benefit from some wear--and maybe I could just treat myself to a couple new accessories instead of an entire dress? Hmmm...you've got me thinking!

re: PS: Doing it.

Whitney said...

Oh, it's happening. I think I've gotten the green light from all of you. :)
Let me know if you find any cute ones!

I'm definitely going to get a fedora and designate it my official beach hat. :)
I'll keep my eyes open at Old Navy and Target! Thanks!
