Tagged January 2013

Franish tagged me in a fun reflection post for 2012, so I thought I'd take a weekend post to rise to the challenge.

Favorite Makeup: Mary Kay concealer has always been a lifesaver (I have some severe undereye baggage), but I discovered Clinique's High Impact Mascara because of a Christmas present. Coming from a girl who has tried every mascara there is, I have to say that this mascara even tops my previously thought "holy grail mascara." For real.

Favorite Book: This one is hard. In 2012, I think that I read more for work and grad school than I did for pleasure. I really enjoyed catching up on Philippa Gregory's new book and the Divergent books. Otherwise, I read a lot of articles about historiography, history books, and books about how to be a better teacher (Brain Rules is a nice teacher recommendation if you're interested in that sort of thing).

Favorite Song/Album: I had Adele and Florence + the Machine on continuous repeat in my car (when I wasn't listening to NPR -- nerrrrrrrrrd). "Breath of Life" by FatM was a favorite for running and for fun.

Favorite Movie: I loved "Hunger Games" and "Skyfall," but I was blown away by "Les Miserables" and "The Hobbit." Can't choose.

One thing you're grateful for: Only one? Because it's obvious I'm grateful for all the big things in my life, I'm going to take a minute to appreciate something that we all take for granted; ice. Ice is amazing. It's always there when I need it, and it's painfully obvious when it isn't. I'm grateful that my life has given me more than I ever need or want so I can take the small things for granted; having access to ice and clean water is a non-issue.

(See how I turned that from being slightly silly to being super serious?)

Greatest Challenge: My greatest challenge of 2012 was training for the half marathon and then completing it. I mean, it's one thing to train for a half marathon from scratch, but balancing grad school, work, coaching, marriage, and friendships was really difficult. I wrote a really fun and heartfelt post about it after I finished the race (and meant it!), but I think I romanticized the process quite a bit. Am I proud of myself? Oh, yeah. Was it hard? You bet. Did I overcome a lot of obstacles? Moreso. But...it was VERY challenging mentally, physically, metaphysically, spiritually, emotionally...you name it. It was the toughest thing I've ever done.

What are you looking forward to in 2013: Being better at running -- and enjoying the processes this time because I know what the outcome will be. I am looking forward to being closer to the end with my master's (still a ways to go), and watching Fins start his thesis work soon. There's so much of life to look forward to, and I'm very grateful that I'm in a place in my life where I can stop and reflect about how thankful I am for it all.

Love your reflection post. My husband works for NPR, so I too listen to it WAY more than I care to admit. My kids often beg me to turn music on for a change...they get tired of talk radio, although they don't mind the interviews with bands they like. :)

That's awesome! I'm an NPR fiend...I quote their news stories way too much in daily conversation/in my teaching...!
