Women Who Work - Meet Jen!

Hi, this is Jen from Librarian for Life Style, a style spin-off from my personal blog Librarian for Life, and I'm excited to participate in Whitney's Women Who Work feature today!

  1. What is your job? I'm a librarian at a community college, and about to transition from part-time to a full-time faculty librarian position in the fall. I've a proud second-generation librarian -- my mom is a school librarian -- hence, the "Librarian for Life." :) Any given work day might involve a mixture of teaching and prepping lesson plans; meetings and committee work; training workshops; helping users with research questions via chat, email, phone, or on the Reference Desk; reading reviews and purchasing materials for our electronic, media, and print collections; learning new databases or software programs; the list goes on... there's always something new and different going on in the library!

  2. Do you have a dress code? How does that define how you dress to work? My workplace doesn't have an official dress code, but overall, the vibe is pretty casual. That also goes for the Pacific Northwest in general. However, I grew up in northeast Texas, so I still respond to those Southern roots of looking "put together." (I am also my mother's daughter, and the urge to color-coordinate remains strong!) My last workplace also had a stricter dress code -- no denim, even in summer! -- so I want to get the most use out of the nicer (but budget-friendly!) pieces already in my wardrobe. And because I'm often teaching or presenting, I want to look more put together and classy to reflect well on the library itself.
  3. What challenges do you face (from your job) in terms of style? The variety of things I do on a daily or weekly basis is a challenge style-wise, so I try to think about what I have planned to do on a certain day and dress accordingly, starting with the shoes. I'm often on my feet, so comfort is a MAJOR consideration. "Comfy" is just as important to me as "cute" and "classy." Of course, that doesn't mean I wear flats all the time, but heels or wedges must pass my personal comfort test. And even though I work in a generally casual environment, I stick by my personal "no jeans" rule when it comes to teaching days. A rule that I broke once with black jeans. ;) 4. What are your closet staples? Cardigans (it's often cold in libraries, so there's a reason we librarians love cardies!), blazers, dark wash jeans, chambray, sunglasses, wedges, and ballet flats come to mind first. I am also influenced by the style of every place I've lived and worked, so certain closet staples have evolved or expanded over time. When we lived in Wisconsin, I fell in love with tall boots and long coats. When we lived in the UAE -- in a hot and humid desert environment along the Arabian Gulf coast -- I lived in strappy flat sandals and added a variety of scarves, shawls, and tunics to my wardrobe. Now having found our home in Oregon, I have happily opened my closet doors to skinny jeans, rain boots, and tights. :)
